1997 Don Challenge

This three round tournament was played at the Melbourne Chess Club, Fitzroy, 29-30 November 1997. There were two rounds on Saturday, the first with four board and the second with three. There was one round on Sunday with three boards. Tournament Director: John Cain.

The tournament was scored using the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) scoring system. In draws players scored 1 point for each center held at game end, plus two for survival or 1 if eliminated after 1905. In a win, the victor scored 39 points (twice a 17 center draw, plus 1) and all other players scored 0. Extensive use was made of tie breakers to separate players on the same score.
