WORLD DIPCON III Results

Canberra, Australia, 25-27 January 1992

The third World Diplomacy Convention (also known as World Dipcon or WDC) was held over the Australia Day long weekend, at the Canberra RSL Club, Canberra. The main organizer and Tournament Director was Luke Clutterbuck. He was assisted by Andrew England (scoring), Frank Meerbach (Diplomacy draw and multi-player boardgames) and John Cain (Diplomacy scoring and Diplomacy draw). A total of 78 people attended the tournament, including four from New Zealand, two from France, two from the UK and one from Germany. There were three tournaments: Individual Diplomacy, Team Diplomacy and Multi-player Boardgames.

Individual Diplomacy Results

The Individual Tournament was held over three rounds, one on each day. Deadlines for each session were set by the Tournament Director and were the same for all boards. Play started at 9:30 am and continued until a time between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm, selected prior to the start of play by the Tournament Director. This was about 1910. The tournament was rated using the STAB III system, which is designed to rate tournaments, particularly where there is a time limit. A player's total score was the sum of their scores for all rounds, divided by three.

1992 World Diplomacy Champion: STEVE GOULD

Steve resides in Adelaide, Australia. He has indicated his intention, circumstances permitting, to attend World Dipcon IV, in Birmingham in 1994, to defend his title.

Team Diplomacy Results

The Team Tournament was held as part of the second round of the Individual Tournament. Teams consisted of seven members, who played on separate boards. Each team member played one of the seven great powers of Diplomacy, so that the team as a whole played all seven powers, removing the "luck" element of the draw for countries which is present in the Individual Tournament. The team's score was a total of the individual scores.

1992 Team Tournament Champions: SOUTHERN COMFORT

Southern Comfort consisted of Greg Jackson, Bill Brown (captain), Robert Wessels, Ken Sproat, Shane Beck, Anthony Swinnerton and Donald Shaw. All are from Victoria, Greg and Ken from the country and the rest from Melbourne. Southern Comfort have stated their intention to defend their title next year.
